Covington sits at the fork of the Bogue Falaya and the Tchefuncte River. Ground here changes block to block. Parts of Covington are dry, sandy pine upland that shapes up easy. The north half of St. Tammany runs to gently rolling pine upland. That soil is sandier and drains better than most ground in Southeast Louisiana. Head south and it flattens into pine flatwoods that stay wet and boggy in season. Then there are the river bottoms. Along the Bogue Falaya and the Tchefuncte, the woods turn to bottomland hardwood. The water sits close to the surface there. Covington itself is only about 26 feet above sea level. On ground that flat, a foot of grade counts for a lot. We read the lot before anything gets cut.
Rain is the other half of it. This area takes heavy rain most of the year, and August is the wettest month. Water that sheets off sandy upland has to land somewhere. On a wooded lot it soaks into the root mat. Take the trees out and it runs instead. That is why so much Covington dirt work turns into drainage work. We shape ground so water leaves on its own and never sits against a slab or a barn. On low river lots we build up rather than dig down, and we compact the fill in lifts.
A raw wooded acre starts with opening it up. Brush and small trees come out. Stumps and root balls get dug out with the excavator. After that the lot needs shape. If you are building, our site prep work takes it to a build-ready pad. Fill goes in, gets packed, and the pad comes up to the right height. If the ground is already open and just sits rough or holds water, land grading is the smaller job. That covers yard leveling and smoothing rough ground. We can cut a swale so water has a path off the property.
Long drives are common on Covington acreage, and gravel takes a beating in this rain. We build gravel driveways and roads with a base course under the top rock. A crown down the middle sends water to the sides instead of into ruts. Horse property and pasture tracks get the same build. On older places the work often starts with removal instead. Old slabs, cracked drives and mobile homes get broken out and hauled off the property. Then the ground comes back to grade and the lot gets left clean.
