Every teardown is a little different, so the plan starts with what the building is sitting on. A brick house on a slab comes apart one way, and a mobile home on piers comes apart another. A shed tight against a fence line is a different job than one in an open field. Old buildings on grown up lots need the brush knocked back first, and our lot clearing work handles that. Most of our demolition work is houses, mobile homes and the outbuildings around them. That means sheds, detached garages, barns, pole barns and old carports. On the commercial side we take down small buildings like shops, storage buildings, single story offices and old restaurants. Wood frame, brick veneer and metal buildings all come down, though each one comes apart in its own order. Southeast Louisiana is hard on buildings. Hurricane season leaves roofs open and walls twisted, and water sits where the ground stays wet. The 2016 flood put water through houses across Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes, and some of them never came back. A house that has been empty and open for years is usually past saving. Rot and a sagging roof cost more to chase than the building is worth. Same with a mobile home that took water and now smells like mold. Taking it down clears the lot for something you can use.
Before anything comes down, the power, water and gas need to be cut off at the building. We can point you to who handles each one. Then we look at the structure and pick the machine for it. The Case excavator does the heavy pulling on a house or a commercial building. The Kubota SVL75-3 skid steer works close in on smaller stuff and tight lots. We work the building down in sections. That keeps the pile where we want it, and the rest of your property stays clean.
As the building comes apart, the material gets loaded out and hauled off. Metal, wood, roofing and brick do not all go to the same place, so it gets sorted as we load. Slabs, footings, steps and old foundations break out with the excavator. We also handle breaking out concrete on driveways, patios and sidewalks as its own job. Pulling a slab out leaves a hole in the ground. We backfill it with clean fill dirt and pack it down so the spot does not settle later.
When the last load leaves, we clean up what is left on the ground. Nails, broken brick, glass and scrap get picked up out of the dirt as best we can. The hole from the slab or the piers gets filled and packed down. Then we smooth the footprint over so water runs off it instead of standing. We fill in the ruts the machines leave behind. The yard almost always looks bigger once the old building is gone. You can mow it or start laying out what goes there next.
If you are rebuilding on the same spot, the lot needs more than a clean surface. A new house or a mobile home needs a pad built up with compacted fill.
