Ground in Slidell holds water. The city sits on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain, about three miles off the water. Elevation runs near 13 feet above sea level, and much of Slidell is low and flat. Rain that would run off somewhere else sits in the yard here for days. Storms make it worse. Katrina pushed surge over 10 feet into the city in 2005. Unincorporated St. Tammany Parish took 13 to 16 feet. Slidell property owners have dealt with low ground and standing water ever since. Most of the fix is dirt. Raise the low spots and shape the ground so water leaves.

Water in Slidell drains toward Lake Pontchartrain through Bayou Bonfouca and Bayou Liberty. The city points to three sources of flooding. Surge comes off the lake during a storm. Bayou Bonfouca backs up when the lake is high. Heavy rain alone can overload local drainage. Flood maps here run AE and VE near the water and X farther inland. The lakefront streets off Carr Drive and Lakeview Drive sit lowest. Marsh sits right behind a lot of them. Older sections near the bayous were built before current elevation rules. Their yards hold water long after the rain quits.
New building here goes up on fill. Lakeshore Villages off Old Spanish Trail is the largest planned community in St. Tammany Parish. It has room for roughly 2,500 homes on about 1,100 acres. Those pads were built up to elevation before a slab went down. Older streets in Olde Towne, Kingspoint and Palm Lake never got that treatment. The rules are strict about how you fix it now. Inside the city, filling or excavating land or a drainage way without a development permit carries penalties. Outside city limits, the parish requires a site work permit for grading, excavation or fill.
A yard that ponds after every rain usually needs the ground reshaped so it drains. That means shaping fall away from the slab and cutting a path to the ditch. A lot that sits too low for what you want to build needs dirt brought in. That means fill placed in lifts and compacted, then worked into a building pad. In Slidell those two jobs often run together. We set the fill first, then grade the finished surface so water leaves the property. Compaction is the part people skip. Loose dirt settles and the low spot comes right back.
Storm damage is its own job. A house or mobile home that took water and never came back has to come down first. We handle the teardown and haul the debris off, slab included. Rotten ground under an old structure gets dug out and swapped for good material. Overgrown lots on the Bayou Liberty side get opened up before the machines can do real work.
